Beginning Essay Writing - Spring 2026

For ages 10+

Essay writing shouldn't be intimidating!! After all, it's just a way to speak up on paper. When kids learn how to support an idea in clear, strong, organized ways, they see how much more convincing they are. Their resistance to writing fades, and their confidence soars.

Kids with these skills use them not just in schoolwork, but in choice-making, conversations, and LIFE.

Overview

In this semester-length course, kids will learn the structure and power of the classic five-paragraph essay. This is foundational knowledge, critical to know before using other forms.

What kids will learn

  • the structure of the tradition five-paragraph "funnel" essay – its importance and parts

  • the parts of a paragraph

  • formulas that help make writing more structured and logical

  • how to generate and organize ideas

  • how to use color to help order information on a page

  • how to identify audience & purpose

  • how to engage the audience from the start

  • how to defend claims

  • how to use strong, relatable examples to support ideas

  • how to use word cues like transitions to guide the reader through the essay

  • how to keep paragraphs focused

  • how to be intentional with coordinating conjunctions, repetition, and sentence structure

  • revision strategies

  • proofreading practice & tips

  • and more!

We’ll write a group essay together at first, learning the structure of the 5-paragraph essay in visual ways that help concepts “stick.” Once those basics are down, we'll move on to mastering the parts of a paragraph. Each student will get to see their original ideas come to life in their writing! This carefully repeated approach will give students essential skills for school and life.

Alignment with Common Core State Standards for grades 5-7 is included.
